Ski to Sea Race 2018
It was a joy to traveled with 7 adventurous Canadian gals to Washington state in May, where we raced in the world's longest multi-sport relay race from Mt. Baker to Bellingham in the annual Ski to Sea. We completed the 4 mile x-country ski, 2.5 mile downhill ski, 8 mile run, 41 mile road bike, 19 mile canoe, 13 mile cyclocross, and 5 mile sea kayak journey in 9 hours and 11 minutes.
Reflections on teamwork:
SPECIALTY matters- none of us would have traded sports with the other. We honoured our own talents. No way you'd catch me in cyclocross (this year!) but I was happy to stern our canoe.
HEART can beat EXPERIENCE - the teams we were racing against have done this race for years, while none of us had been to Bellingham. We drew upon our tenacity where our course knowledge lacked.
GEL matters- we were all brought together by our captain Heidi, and many of us met only the night before the race. We took the time to have dinner and to really be present with one another. We developed a "got your back" mentality quick, and because we were brought together by someone we all loved we were fast to care for one another. Oh- and our team Leave it to Beavers earned 1st place in the Recreational Women's Division, and 174th overall out of 364 teams.
