Choose The Hard Thing
TL;DR: DO NOT LET THE HARDEST THING YOU GO THROUGH BE SOMETHING THAT 'HAPPENS' TO YOU - CHOOSE HARD ON YOUR OWN TERMS!
I ran into someone I admire recently and he was quick to celebrate my ultra marathon canoe partner Heidi and I's Yukon River Quest accomplishment.
About the 715 km race, which you can read more about here, he asked me:
“Was it the hardest thing you’ve ever done?”
Waking up every morning to go to a job where you can’t express yourself, where your unique talents aren’t put to use? Harder.
Being in an academic program where you are asked to regurgitate old ideas instead of share and mold your own? Harder.
The feeling of masking yourself, of not having a place where you can use your own voice? Harder.
Falling asleep next to a partner who doesn’t see you- and doesn’t care to? Harder.
Living a life that doesn’t feel like yours? Harder.
I go after the hard things I choose so I don’t get stuck in the hard things I don’t have to (but which many of us assume we do ‘HAVE TO’).
What hard thing could you do to give you the power to bust through the rest of the shit? You don’t need 56 consecutive hours in a canoe- but you just might need something.
